The NHS is the largest single source of sponsored jobs in the UK. Today there are 2,809 NHS vacancies on this site whose adverts welcome applicants who need a visa, from 334 different NHS organisations.
How to spot sponsorship in an NHS advert
Every advert on NHS Jobs has a set of standard sections. When an employer is willing to sponsor, the advert includes a Certificate of Sponsorship section saying that applications from people who need Skilled Worker sponsorship are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. When that section is missing, the employer has not said it can sponsor the role.
Some trusts add their own notes, such as saying that certain bands no longer meet the visa rules. We read the whole advert, and leave a job out when its own text rules sponsorship out, even if the standard section is present.
Which visa?
Most sponsored NHS roles for doctors, nurses, midwives and allied health professionals use the Health and Care Worker visa, a version of the Skilled Worker visa with lower fees and no immigration health surcharge. Other NHS roles, such as managers, analysts and IT staff, use the standard Skilled Worker visa.
Pay by band
NHS staff are paid on national pay scales called Agenda for Change bands, while doctors have their own scales. The table shows the salaries advertised today for jobs whose titles include a band:
| NHS band (from job title) | Jobs today | Typical advertised range |
|---|---|---|
| Band 3 | 6 | £25,800 to £27,500 |
| Band 4 | 18 | £30,800 to £36,000 |
| Band 5 | 28 | £32,100 to £39,000 |
| Band 6 | 60 | £40,000 to £48,100 |
| Band 7 | 55 | £49,400 to £62,700 |
| Band 8a | 16 | £57,500 to £64,800 |
| Band 8b | 6 | £66,600 to £77,400 |
Since July 2025, many roles below degree level, including most band 2 and 3 roles, can no longer be sponsored for new applicants. Jobs on this site with lower advertised pay carry a Check eligibility label.

Applying through NHS Jobs
- Read the person specification. Shortlisting is done against the essential criteria, so show clearly how you meet each one.
- Write a focused supporting statement. Use examples, and mirror the headings of the job description.
- Answer the right-to-work questions honestly. Saying that you need sponsorship is expected for these roles.
- Register with your regulator early. Nurses and midwives need NMC registration, doctors need GMC registration, and most allied health professionals need HCPC registration.
- Prepare for a values-based interview. Trusts assess candidates against their published values. See our interview guide.

Questions people ask
Do all NHS trusts sponsor visas?
No. Many NHS organisations hold a sponsor licence, but each advert says whether that particular job can be sponsored. Look for the Certificate of Sponsorship section.
Can I apply for NHS jobs from outside the UK?
Yes. Many trusts recruit internationally. You apply on NHS Jobs, usually interview by video, and the trust assigns a certificate of sponsorship if it offers you the job.
Which band can be sponsored?
It depends on the occupation code and pay. Since July 2025 most roles below degree level cannot be sponsored for new applicants, which rules out most band 2 and 3 jobs. Check the current rules on GOV.UK.
