What you need

  • GMC registration with a licence to practise. International medical graduates usually qualify through the General Medical Council's PLAB test or an accepted postgraduate qualification. Some posts sponsor doctors through medical training initiative schemes.
  • The right visa. Doctors working in the NHS usually use the Health and Care Worker visa.
  • The right grade. Trust-grade and clinical fellow posts are common first jobs in the UK. Specialty doctor and consultant posts usually ask for significant experience, and consultants normally need specialist registration.
